IEP Parent Checklist

Before the IEP Meeting

  • Review your child’s current IEP
  • Write down your concerns and goals
  • Gather important documents (evaluations, reports, notes)
  • List your child’s strengths and challenges
  • Prepare questions for the school team
  • Request copies of reports in advance
  • Bring a support person if needed

During the IEP Meeting

  • Make sure all required team members are present
  • Ask questions of something is unclear
  • Take notes
  • Discuss your child’s goals and progress
  • Review services and accommodations carefully
  • Speak up about your concerns
  • Do not feel pressured to sign immediately (if you do not agree)

After the IEP Meeting

  • Review the finalized IEP document
  • Make sure all agreed changes are included
  • Follow up with the school if needed
  • Keep copies of all documents organized
  • Monitor your child’s progress regularly
  • Request another meeting of concerns arise
