Meet Danielle Summerall-Smith

Special Education Advocate • Educator • Helping Parents Navigate the IEP Process with Confidence

Hi, I'm Danielle.

For years, I've worked alongside students, families, and educators in special education. During that time, I noticed something that stayed with me. Many parents left IEP meetings feeling overwhelmed, confused, and unsure of what had just happened. Not because they didn't care. Not because they weren't strong advocates. But because no one had taken the time to explain the process in a way that made sense. That's why I created Advocate4StudentSuccess.

My goal is to help parents understand not only their rights, but also the educational process behind school decisions, so they can advocate with confidence while building positive partnerships that keep students at the center of every decision.

My goal is simple:

To help parents understand the system so they can confidently advocate for their child.

Why Families Choose Advocate4StudentSuccess

Many resources teach parents what to say.

Advocate4StudentSuccess helps parents understand why.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. Why schools make certain decisions
  2. What IDEA requires
  3. How to advocate with knowledge, confidence, and purpose.

Because understanding the process is the first step toward effective advocacy.

"How schools identify, evaluate, and support students under IDEA":

  • Step 1: Referral & Identification
  • Either a parent or the school notices a child is struggling and requests a formal evaluation in writing.
  • Step 2: The Evaluation
  • The school conducts comprehensive testing (at no cost to you) to look at all areas of suspected disability and determine if it impacts their learning.
  • Step 3: Eligibility Determination
  • A team (including you!) meets to review the results and decide if the child meets the criteria for one of the 13 disability categories under IDEA.
  • Step 4: Creating the IEP
  • If eligible, the team writes an Individualized Education Program (IEP) tailored with specific goals, accommodations, and specialized instruction.
  • Step 5: Ongoing Support & Review
  • The school implements the supports, tracks progress, and meets with you at least once a year to review and update the plan.
